About ViFive

ViFive is a human movement company. We develop accessible vision AI technology to inform clinical decision making and embed the patient at the center of MSK healthcare. ViFive acts as a 3D motion analysis lab to provide clinicians with quantitative data and powerful visualizations that elevate the standard of care.

I worked for Verily-Google Life Sciences, Apple, Amazon Web Services, and Samsung Research before starting ViFive. I was a college athlete on the swimming team. We were pretty good, actually. We won the national championship twice in a row, and I probably spent more time practicing than studying computer science, which was my major. Unfortunately, I had a bad car accident and broke my shoulder. After the accident, chronic shoulder dislocation started, and went through hill-sachs/bankart repair surgery. Right after the surgery, I came to the US and had a long journey in the rehab process. My frustration was silo approaches from orthopedic doctors and physical therapists. Also, it was hard to describe my condition and provide feedback to develop a personalized treatment plan for my recovery. That was the beginning of my company. I hope to provide a digital health platform for healthcare providers specializing in musculoskeletal disorders. I strongly believe in a digital platform that enables data-driven approaches based on vision AI technology.

I had never met any physical therapists until I was 40. It was not because I never had back pain. From time to time, I experienced certain pain in my back but it was something I could withstand and it usually went away after a week or two. Furthermore, there was slight discomfort in my back most of the time but it was something I thought I could ignore. That was until I had this massive back pain after a month I turned 40.

One day, I experienced terrible back pain. I was holding my 6 year old daughter the previous night and something seemed to have gone wrong. The pain was so harsh that I couldn’t get out of bed. I had to stay in bed for half a day without being able to do anything. Eventually, since I wasn’t able to walk by myself, I had to get some support from my family and went to see a physical therapist.

After an assessment, the DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) explained that I had a slipped disc which terrified me. I knew some friends who had disc issues and saw them suffering for a very long time. Most of them had to go through surgeries and, even after that, they didn’t fully recover. Seeing my worried face, the DPT tried to reassure me, saying, with proper exercises, I could get fully recovered without surgeries. He asked me to do a cobra pose for half an hour which was one of the few exercises I could do at that time. What surprised me was, after 30 minutes of the cobra, I was able to walk by myself albeit there was some small pain. Change from not-being-able-to-walk to being-able-to-walk in 30 minutes was an eye opening experience and that’s when I got very interested in physical therapy.

That experience changed my perspective on physical therapy. Most of all, I wanted to contribute to this area by making physical therapy accessible. Trained in machine learning from my past careers in finance (Goldman Sachs) and advertising (Moloco), I knew there were many models we could use to track body movement. Combined with motion tracking and data driven approach, I realized there were so many things we could do to help anyone suffering from MSK (e.g back pain, shoulder pain etc). I wanted to make a change in physical therapy and that’s why I decided to start ViFive. Currently, we have many advanced models and we not only track the movement of the patient but also provide data driven assessment, monitor progress and find an efficient way to recover. Our goal is to provide a healthier life for anyone suffering from MSK via advanced technology.
